01 CHAOTIC NEUTRAL

Mainstream conceptions of the dynamics between the biosphere, climate, and ecosystems have long upheld the ideal of stability and balance. This essay surveys the legacy of these views, from moral conceptions of the world to the notion of competition-as-equilibrium. It then addresses the emergence of a picture of the planet as a superorganism and, finally, advocates for public discourse to embrace non-equilibrium ecology as a more generative paradigm.

Using a parametric model and 3D printing technology to reverse engineer a water whistle, Flock investigates the emergent, higher-order complexity of water and sound.
