01 CHAOTIC NEUTRAL
Mainstream conceptions of the dynamics between the biosphere, climate, and ecosystems have long upheld the ideal of stability and balance. This essay surveys the legacy of these views, from moral conceptions of the world to the notion of competition-as-equilibrium. It then addresses the emergence of a picture of the planet as a superorganism and, finally, advocates for public discourse to embrace non-equilibrium ecology as a more generative paradigm.
Dune is a biannual, bilingual academic journal of fashion and visual culture, with open call, welcoming scientific contributions. It is published by Flash Art, with graphic design by Multi Form.

09 FLOCK
is an instrument inspired by the traditional Peruvian water whistle which uses an algorithm to make music. The original instrument follows a basic principle whereby water flowing from one chamber to another pushes air through hole to make noise. Using a parametric model and 3D printing technology to reverse engineer a water whistle, Flock investigates the emergent, higher-order complexity of water and sound.

010 .ALTAR
